Artist Statement
Our "Sovereign" tee is inspired by daily life of being a Sovereign Blackfulla in Meanjin. To be sovereign is to understand that we have agency over our bodies; that these lands not only need us for them to thrive, but we are the only ones with the knowledge to govern them; that no matter how many ancestors that we forget, they will always remember us; that our governance systems for all our countries will always outweigh the colonial laws that try to govern our lands; that we never gave up our lands, or freedoms and we are owed the right of self-determination. Our sovereignty was never ceded. We will always be sovereign, and they will continue hating us for this reason; but pay them no mind, they wish they were as deadly as us.
